EXECUTOR

Wills: Executor

Executor:

You’ve just been appointed executor of a will. The person has now died. What do you do? Well, the first thing you have to do is get yourself appointed. You have to go to the surrogate’s office and receive your letters testamentary appointing you. After that your responsibility is to make sure that everyone who’s named in that will receives what they’re supposed to receive. That means you have to gather together the assets of the estate, you have to make sure that the bills are paid, and finally you have to make sure that -- that those things that are in the estate are properly distributed. You may not make friends with some of the people that you have to distribute to. Because some might want specific property that others might be entitled to under that estate. Your job is to follow the rules of law and also to follow the way in which that estate is laid out. And you don’t have any choice. You have a job to do, and you got to do it the right way.
