PERSONAL BELONGINGS

Wills: Personal Belongings

Personal Belongings:

After a will comes into play, and that means after the death of a person, the executor has to take charge. And when the person dies, just like anyone dies, they -- they die owning property, personal things. Your clothes, your -- perhaps rings, watches, that type of thing. Well, first of all, the state of New Jersey has a provision that you can add to a will, and I certainly recommend it, that says that if you as the -- as the testator write down a list of things and who is supposed to get it, the executor’s going to follow that recommendation. Actually that -- that bequest. That’s really what it is.

On the other hand, if there isn’t such a note and there is this personal property, the executor is charged with the responsibility of doing something with it. And in fact the executor may choose to donate some of the things to charity. And this is just the standard way to do it. Basically if you want to leave specific personal property to specific people, that provision is in your will that leaves it to those people. And as long as you have signed the letter that is attached to your will, it will be followed by the executor.
